About Postgraduate Dentistry

Postgraduate dentistry courses give you the specific skills you need to pursue a professional career in dentistry, with expert knowledge of dental and orthodontic procedures.

Dentists help maintain patients’ oral health by diagnosing and treating problems with the gums, teeth and mouth, and encouraging good oral hygiene. Postgraduate dentistry courses allow graduates or professionals to continue training, pursue research interests or specialise in their preferred area of dentistry.

Universities offer postgraduate degree programs in a variety of clinical and non-clinical dental subjects. The two main types are masters degrees and doctorate degrees. Upon completing a doctorate, you will be awarded a Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) or a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).

Postgraduate dentistry courses typically cover molecular biology, mouth anatomy, and diagnosis and treatment planning, and it is common for students to learn surgical procedures through clinical work. Degree specialisms include paediatrics, oral and maxillofacial care, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics, endodontics and dental public health.

Postgraduate dentistry is available as a full-time (3 to 5 years) or part-time (up to 6 years) program.

To qualify for a postgraduate course, students generally must hold a Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS or BChD/MChD) and have completed a year of Dental Foundation Training (DFT) within an approved dental practice or hospital.
