How to thrive in a Masters in English Literature – top tips for postgrads

A qualification in English literature may not rank among the most popular degrees in the UK, but it remains a mainstay across some of the best institutions in the country. At last count, over 90 universities in the UK offered degrees in English literature, and this includes masters courses.

Pursuing a Masters in English Literature is an opportunity to deepen not only your knowledge of texts, but your ability to think, question and articulate ideas in a more advanced manner. At postgraduate level, you’ll get to immerse yourself in the most diverse literature, critical theories and cultural debates, developing sophisticated analytical skills and intellectual independence.

Beyond the classroom, an MA in English literature cultivates highly transferable skills that are valued across a wide range of careers. Some postgraduates move into publishing, journalism, education, communications, marketing, cultural heritage, public policy or the creative industries, while others pursue doctoral research and academic careers.

With a masters in English literature, the possibilities really are endless, especially if you follow our top tips for really thriving during postgraduate study!

Don’t just be well read, read well

As you might expect, a masters degree in English literature involves a lot of reading, which can get very intense and overwhelming if managed poorly. Even an undergraduate degree in English literature won’t prepare you for the volume of reading to come, but the key to being well read throughout your course is prioritising quality over quantity.

As a masters student, you need to learn how to read with purpose. Read strategically by identifying key arguments and debates along the way and making notes that can be easily (and quickly) referred to when writing your dissertation and essays.

While we’re on the subject of dissertations…

Starting dissertation planning early is always recommended, particularly when studying a masters in English literature.

Your dissertation will be the centrepiece of your postgraduate degree, so don’t be afraid to explore potential topics as soon as you begin your studies. Many postgrads keep a running document of ideas, quotations and questions as inspiration.

Use seminars to your advantage

An MA in English literature is built around discussion, so keep this in mind when attending lectures and seminars. Here the University of Portsmouth shares their advice for making the most of your seminars:

“Preparing properly means you'll be able to contribute to the discussion and benefit fully from the class. Highlight key points in the text while you read and write down any questions you have. Bring your notes to your seminar and mark key sections so you can find them quickly… Consider studying additional sources on your seminar topic, especially if the subject is important to you or will be central to your assessments. Your course reading list can help you get started.”

Seek out opportunities around you

A masters degree in English literature is an opportunity to engage both inside and outside the classroom. The most important piece of advice we can give you is to work with the people around you – build relationships with your peers, discuss essay ideas and research interests with academic staff, and hone your skills and experience everywhere else.

You’ll quickly find there are so many wonderful opportunities to complement your studies. You can write for student journals, attend literary events and lectures, intern in your target industry and present at postgraduate conferences to build your confidence, strengthen your CV and lay the foundation for a successful career.
