Summary
Our Postgraduate Diploma in Orthodontic Therapy will enable you to become a competent clinician with the necessary skills, knowledge and behaviours to work as an Orthodontic Therapist. As well as being able to register with the General Dental Council (GDC), you will gain the skills to modify practice throughout your career in response to scientific and technical advances in the field.
From 2023, Bristol Dental School will be located in a £36 million purpose-built Dental School. You will have exclusive access to cutting-edge technology, state-of-the-art facilities and experienced dental professionals. University of Bristol Dentistry is ranked 4th in the UK (Complete University Guide Subject Rankings 2024), with outstanding results for our research in the Research Excellence Framework 2021.
You will be taught pre-clinical skills in our brand-new training facilities prior to commencing your clinical training in your workplace under supervision of your clinical supervisor. You will benefit from a variety of teaching methods during your training that will help you to develop the confidence to deliver tailored advice and orthodontic care within the GDC scope of practice as an Orthodontic Therapist.

Entry requirements | A GDC registered qualification at BSc, Diploma HE, or Diploma level 3/4, and one of four level 3 qualifications listed below. Applicants must have relevant clinical work experience specifically in orthodontics at a minimum of 24 hours clinically-focused employment per week. A-levels: CC in two A-levels including Biology or equivalent. BTEC: DDM in Applied Science BTEC National Level 3 Extended Diploma, with Distinctions in five specified biology units. Access to HE Diploma: Access to HE Diploma in Science, Biomedical/Medical/Health Science or Psychology (or similar titles). The 45 graded level 3 credits must include: 15 credits at Distinction and 30 at Merit or above, and at least 12 credits (with 9 at Distinction) from Biology units. Mature students can contact mature-students@bristol.ac.uk to check the suitability of their Access course.
