Queen Mary University of London: Institute of Dentistry

Queen Mary University of London
Institute of Dentistry

A brief history of Queen Mary University of London
Queen Mary has a long, proud and distinctive history built on four historic institutions stretching back to 1785 and beyond. The four institutions were founded to improve the lives of people with less privilege. St Bartholomew’s Hospital Medical College and The London Hospital Medical College were established to improve the health of the local communities. The two hospitals lie in two very different parts of London, the City and the East End, meaning our students are exposed to a greater diversity of people and their problems than at almost any other dental school. Westfield College and Queen Mary College provided education to women and working class communities in the East End, respectively, at a time when these groups faced extreme barriers to education. The Institute of Dentistry opened in 1911. In 1995 Queen Mary and Westfield College merged with Barts and The London School of Medicine and Dentistry.

An internationally renowned dental school
Queen Mary is ranked 14th in the world for Dentistry (QS World University Rankings by Subject 2021). You'll be taught by world-leading experts, who bring together a number of researchers in basic and clinical sciences, whose teaching is informed by their innovative research in their specialist field. We offer supervision to students across a wide range of postgraduate programmes.

The student community
Queen Mary has more than 28,000 students and 4,400 members of staff. The students are drawn from over 160 nationalities with around 4,000 based offshore, predominantly in China. Queen Mary has been recognised as the most inclusive Russell Group university in The Times and Sunday Times Good University Guide 2021.

Study and research opportunities
The Institute of Dentistry provides a thriving and stimulating academic and research environment, offering a range of dental taught postgraduate courses. Our programmes emphasise the development of practical and clinical skills alongside research training leading to a supervised project or dissertation. We offer a variety of postgraduate programmes, which include Doctorates of Clinical Dentistry (DClinDents), clinical and non-clinical masters degrees, diplomas and certificates as well as online distance learning programmes.

Excellent facilities
The Institute of Dentistry is located in modern, purpose-built premises at The Royal London Dental Hospital at Whitechapel in east London, which houses some of the most modern and technologically advanced equipment in the UK. The Whitechapel campus is the main home for the School of Medicine and Dentistry, and includes a number of our specialist medical and dental institutes, library, students union and cafes.

“The facilities of the Dental Hospital, the Dental Laboratory as well as the Research Laboratory are equipped with instruments and materials of the latest technologies. It was inspiring to work alongside world class researchers whose office doors were always open in order to aid the students as much as they could.” Andreas Tsoutsos (Winner of Drapers' Company Prize 2017), MSc Dental Technology 2017
