Bangor University’s School of Education has a long tradition and an established reputation in the field of teacher education. Situated between the Snowdonia mountain range and the sea, Bangor offers a stunning study location and particularly appeals to students with an interest in outdoor activities. Wales also offers Teacher Training Incentives of up to £20,000.

Under the guidance of enthusiastic staff, the School provides a wide range of progressive courses for both aspiring and experienced teachers. Most of our courses can by studied through the medium of Welsh, English or bilingually. We have well-established partnerships with primary and secondary schools through north Wales and beyond to provide varied and supportive training environments.

Postgraduate study
We offer postgraduate courses for both the aspiring and experienced teachers as well as research degrees in education. We also offer a degree in Applied Innovation Design. Visit our website for full details on all the courses we offer.

PGCE – Primary and Secondary as part of the CaBan Partnership
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a one-year, full-time course. Students will spend a substantial part of their course on a number of placements in partner schools, under the guidance of both school mentors and university tutors.The PGCE with QTS is recognised across Wales and England and is often transferable further afield for entry into the teaching profession. Watch our video to see how the CaBan partnership can train you to teach in Wales and beyond.

All Initial Teacher Training applications should be made via the UCAS Teacher Training website.

Training Grants
Wales offers Teacher Training Incentives of up to £20,000 for well qualified graduates in priority subject areas.

PGCE Primary with QTS (3-11) – Through Medium of Welsh or English
The Primary PGCE programme is designed to provide you with a deep understanding of how children learn, and equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to develop as a creative and innovative teacher.  You will learn about children’s development through the Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 and be supported to become an excellent teacher. Through the CaBan partnership this course can also be studied with the University of Chester.

PGCE Secondary with QTS
The Secondary PGCE programme is designed to provide you with a deep understanding of how children and adolescents learn, and equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to develop as a creative and innovative teacher. You will learn about adolescent’s development through the Secondary sector and be supported to become an excellent teacher. 

PGCE Secondary Education through the medium of English or Welsh, specialising in one of the following secondary education subjects:

MSc
Applied Innovation Design
The world is changing, you can either allow change to happen to you or you can be a key part of the change.  The Applied Innovation Design course will prepare you to take a leading/active role in enabling a change in whatever field you choose, through the experiential application of current theory and commercial practices.

MA
Education Studies
Our MA in Education Studies includes elements such as curriculum development and educational leadership and management and can help to boost your career. The full-time Education Studies programme includes a placement module, while the part-time course is taught during weekends or evenings and is suited to students who are already working in a related field. 

Music with Education
Music with Education is a flexible programme which allows you to develop a deeper understanding of the theory and practice of teaching music to others.

Educational Leadership 
The MSc in Educational Leadership significantly contributes to the Government’s agenda to provide Wales with inspirational school leaders who are well prepared and supported to lead their schools as learning organisations and has been approved by the National Education Leadership Academy (Wales).

Research
Research in Education is based around these main research areas:

  • Bilingualism, Language Development and Bilingual Education 
  • Inclusion/ Special Educational Needs and Behaviour Analysis 
  • Literacy development and Interventions 
  • Teacher Education, Professional Learning and Education Leadership 

We can offer supervision on research degrees within any of these areas.

We have a particular research specialism in the areas of bilingualism and bilingual education. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), work submitted by our academics as part of the Modern Languages and Linguistics Unit of Assessment helped Bangor University achieve joint 2nd place in the UK for research impact within the discipline. 

Facilities
Bangor University has all the resources you need to help you through your studies. These include libraries which are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week; free wi-fi across the campus; printing facilities; dedicated study areas; and a number of well-stocked libraries, with access to journals and other e-resources (as well as books, newspapers, reports, research papers and other printed resources). All of this is combined with investment in state-of-the art facilities, including a new arts and innovation centre (Pontio) and a recently refurbished gym and sports hall. 

Students’ Union
The Students’ Union offers a huge number of award-winning sports clubs and societies – covering every interest from photography to Quidditch – all of which are free to join.
