Bangor University’s School of Education has a long tradition and an established reputation in the field of teacher education. Situated between the Snowdonia mountain range and the sea, Bangor offers a stunning study location and particularly appeals to students with an interest in outdoor activities. Wales also offers Teacher Training Incentives of up to £20,000.

Under the guidance of enthusiastic staff, the School provides a wide range of progressive courses for both aspiring and experienced teachers. Most of our courses can by studied through the medium of Welsh, English or bilingually. We have well-established partnerships with primary and secondary schools through north Wales and beyond to provide varied and supportive training environments.

PGCE – Primary and Secondary as part of the CaBan Partnership
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE) is a one-year, full-time course. Students will spend a substantial part of their course on a number of placements in partner schools, under the guidance of both school mentors and university tutors. The PGCE with QTS is recognised across Wales and England and is often transferable further afield for entry into the teaching profession. Training Grants
Wales offers Teacher Training Incentives of up to £20,000 for well qualified graduates in priority subject areas.

PGCE Primary with QTS (3-11) – Through Medium of Welsh or English
The Primary PGCE programme is designed to provide you with a deep understanding of how children learn, and equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to develop as a creative and innovative teacher.  You will learn about children’s development through the Foundation Phase and Key Stage 2 and be supported to become an excellent teacher.

PGCE Secondary with QTS
The Secondary PGCE programme is designed to provide you with a deep understanding of how children and adolescents learn, and equip you with the skills and knowledge needed to develop as a creative and innovative teacher. You will learn about adolescent’s development through the Secondary sector and be supported to become an excellent teacher.

PGCE Secondary Education through the medium of English, specialising in one of the following secondary education subjects: Biology, Chemistry, Design & Technology, Geography, Mathematics, Outdoor Activities, Physical Education, Physics

PGCE Secondary Education through the medium of Welsh, specialising in one of the following secondary education subjects: Mathemateg, Cemeg, Ffiseg, Ieithoedd Modern, Cymraeg, Technoleg Gwybodaeth, Celf, Bioleg, Dylunio a Thechnoleg, Saesneg, Daearyddiaeth, Hanes, Cerddoriaeth, Addysg Gorfforol, Addysg Grefyddol, Gweithgareddau Awyr Agored. Through the CaBan partnership the English language versions of courses only offered in Welsh at Bangor are provided by the University of Chester.

Non Teacher Training Postgraduate Provision

MA Education Studies
Our MA in Education Studies includes elements such as curriculum development and educational leadership and management and can help to boost your career. The full-time Education Studies programme includes a placement module, while the part-time course is taught during weekends or evenings and is suited to students who are already working in a related field.

MA Music with Education
Music with Education is a flexible programme which allows you to develop a deeper understanding of the theory and practice of teaching music to others.

MSc Educational Leadership
The MSc in Educational Leadership significantly contributes to the Government’s agenda to provide Wales with inspirational school leaders who are well prepared and supported to lead their schools as learning organisations and has been approved by the National Education Leadership Academy (Wales).

CaBan – The North Wales Partnership with the learner at its heart
CaBan is a new collaborative centre established to provide Initial Teacher Education in north Wales between Bangor University, the University of Chester, lead and network schools and GwE. This new and unique collaboration brings the excellence of two established teacher education institutions into a new model benefitting from the understanding of both Welsh and English teaching environments whilst retaining its emphasis on preparing prospective teachers for the teaching environment in Wales. Uniquely, all partner groups have played a significant part in devising a suite of outstanding Primary and Secondary programmes for Teacher Education, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, that take into account what is required to prepare exceptional teachers for Wales and beyond. We can offer supervision on research degrees within any of these areas.

We have a particular research specialism in the areas of bilingualism and bilingual education. In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014), work submitted by our academics as part of the Modern Languages and Linguistics Unit of Assessment helped Bangor University achieve joint 2nd place in the UK for research impact within the discipline.
