Student Saving Tip: Get Cleaning!

Postgrad PhD and Masters students can both earn and save money through a cleaning business. The students involved can turn it into a fully-fledged business whilst at university, or it can be a micro-project that recurs whenever the students need money.

How can a post grad student make money through cleaning?

The student(s) offer to clean the dorm rooms and shared-accommodation houses of other students for a small fee. Keep the prices low and more students will sign up. It will also ruffle fewer feathers if people think you are working for a pittance. It may not be glamorous, but is it any worse than serving cigs to people in a newsagent, or burgers to kids at a fast food restaurant? Besides, it means you can work whenever you want, or at least whenever you feel like offering the service.

How can a post grad student save money through cleaning?

It can help students keep their deposit through the fact that the house remains cleaner through the year. There is little point in simply cleaning the house on the last day before you move out because stains and mould will have started to occur by that time. Hire a student cleaning service every now and again, and it makes it a lot easier to hold on to your deposit.

Saving money is more important as a student because your budget is so tight.

Family visits require a cleaning service When family members are visiting, a post grad may need to do a little tidying. The trouble is that it is hard work or the student may be very busy, which is why it is handy to hire a cleaner. You may not get much free time when studying, so hiring a cleaner may give you a little breathing space. Plus, it may be a good investment because if your family sees that you are still prospering in university, then they will be less likely to complain about your efforts and more likely to get out their bank card.

Cleaning services can be used for conflict resolution There are times when hiring a postgrad cleaning team will help you resolve a conflict. In shared housing, there are always those that do the cleaning and those that do not do too much. Problems mount when friends come around that are friends with more than one person. Those friends leave, and the two or more student tenants are expected to clean the mess, but they both feel it is not their job and it causes tension. In this case, or if you have a party, you can hire a student cleaner. It funnels at bit of cash to other students whilst also helping to clean your shared accommodation.

Weigh it against your own time You could spend four hours working at your part-time job for a reasonable wage, or you can spend four hours cleaning. Basically, you earn more than you lose if you make sure you only pay the cleaner a small amount (less than minimum wage). In that case, you come out with more money than you started, and the cleaner has a little extra cash for doing the jobs you don't want to.
