Research areas

Ecology and environment:

The university offers a broad range of research opportunities in biological sciences, encompassing theoretical and experimental science in both field and laboratory settings. Projects generally use a range of field, laboratory and analytical methods, providing excellent training and preparation for future careers.

Biology of taxonomic group:

Social insect behaviour and evolution; avian biology; mammalian biology (including equine). Recent research projects include: the thermal biology of leafcutting ants; the effect of worming treatments on horses; the incidence of disease in seabirds.

Microbiology and Molecular Biology:

Social insect behaviour and evolution; avian biology; mammalian biology (including equine). Recent research projects include: the thermal biology of leafcutting ants; the effect of worming treatments on horses; the incidence of disease in seabirds.

Citizen science and public engagement:

The use of volunteer ‘citizen science’ data in ecology and zoology; the public understanding of science. Recent research projects include: nationwide flying ant survey to map distribution of swarms; documentation of occurrence of house spiders through "spider in da house" app; and an international survey of starling murmuration behaviour (all in collaboration with the Royal Society of Biology); the accuracy of the public in recording animal behaviour (in collaboration with the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust).

Research opportunities are also available in the following areas: Countryside and Community or Geography and Environmental Sciences.

All students are required to take and complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Research Methods to support the development of their project and their education as researchers.
