Summary

Our Advanced Chemical Engineering with Healthcare Technology programme explores advanced chemical engineering topics with an emphasis on healthcare technology. Our three major research areas – formulation engineering, energy, and healthcare technology – guide the programme.

Chemical engineering is dynamic and evolving, and today extends far beyond its roots in oil and gas processing. It provides many solutions to problems facing the healthcare, pharmaceutical, biotechnological, energy and food and drink sectors.

This programme focuses on advanced chemical engineering topics that inform the modern process engineering industry, with a focus on healthcare technology topics. Our three major research areas – healthcare technology, formulation engineering, and energy – guide the programme, with a focus on healthcare.

There is an increasing demand to deliver new technologies that allow us to more rapidly diagnose and better treat patients. Advances in medicine mean we are living longer than ever before, and our chances of survival following devastating, life-changing events are increasing. However, these successes lead to major challenges. We've extended life expectancy, but there is no commensurate improvement in the quality of life to match the longer life-span. This demand has led to a rapid increase in the amount of research undertaken to develop new healthcare technologies.

The School of Chemical Engineering at Birmingham focuses on research in three areas, answering three major questions of global importance:

Healthcare Technology - How can we maintain a healthy ageing population?

Formulation Engineering - How can we develop and produce formulated products such as food or pharmaceuticals with novel properties in a sustainable manner?

Energy - How can we reshape energy supply and storage in a suitable way?

This Advanced Chemical Engineering with Healthcare Technology programme focuses on exploring the key aspects of chemical engineering that we can use to answer these three questions, with a focus on the Healthcare Technology theme. Core modules will give you an advanced understanding of chemical engineering principles. Pathway modules will allow you to develop expertise in Healthcare Technology topics and optional modules will allow you to choose additional areas of study.

The research project (MSc only) will allow you to undertake independent research with world-leading research teams within the school. Our graduates are well prepared for a career in a variety of industries and have an opportunity to capitalise on the growing global demand for chemical engineers in many sectors, including healthcare technology.
