Course summary - Learn the key skills required for a range of building surveying professional roles.

  • Develop practical and theoretical knowledge and critical understanding of relevant issues and subjects.

  • Study topics including property law, economics and market context, sustainable development and refurbishment, evaluating building condition and commercial aspects of building development and management.

Gain the skills and knowledge necessary to become an effective professional surveyor. Accredited by The Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors and the Chartered Institute of Building, the course has a hands on-focus as you work with students from other disciplines including quantity surveying, construction project management and real estate.

How you learn The course provides a blend of academic, professional and practical skill development to ensure that you are attractive to potential employers in the UK and overseas. It builds upon your current development and education both as an individual and a member of the professional community.

Due to its fast track delivery, this course does not include a work placement. However, the department and careers service provide information on numerous potential employers some of whom offer short work experience and most offer graduate employment.

Field trips

Projects which rely on data collection and analysis, cross-disciplinary knowledge and skills, team working and the development of new areas of expertise play a major part and are drawn together within an integrative field trip culminating in an international project in a foreign city. Placed in a challenging and unfamiliar environment, you will complete a development project in interdisciplinary teams.

Networking opportunities

Departmental initiatives, which currently include the Natural and Built Environment Employers Fair, facilitate your engagement with sector-specific employers and are an example of a much wider employability-related provision within the University.

The department also participates with the Property Training Forum, which coordinates recruitment rounds, provides valuable input in terms of developing students and, with the support of professional bodies, seeks to improve career prospects.
