Summary

There has been a significant increase in the number of pupils with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) both in Northern Ireland and worldwide. With this, there is a growing demand for educators who can design, implement and lead on effective strategies to foster the engagement and achievement of pupils with diverse needs. This Postgraduate Certificate in Leading Inclusive Classrooms is designed for educational practitioners who want to strengthen their professional expertise in supporting and leading on the inclusion of children and young people with SEND in both mainstream and specialist educational settings.

The certificate focuses on evidence-based and pupil-centred strategies to create more inclusive environments, enhance learning outcomes, and improve the quality of life of children and young people with SEND. Students will explore frameworks for implementation, such as multi-tiered systems of support and graduated responses which will equip them with tools to address diverse student needs at both classroom and whole-school levels.

By engaging with contemporary educational research, students will develop the capacity to critically interpret findings and make meaningful connections between theoretical perspectives and classroom practice. Students will also engage in reflective practice to evaluate their own approaches, evaluate their pupils’ needs, and refine strategies for impact and effectiveness.
