School of Engineering
Cardiff University's School of Engineering is one of the UK's leading engineering schools and we attract postgraduate and undergraduate students from around the world. We are located in the centre of the city and possess excellent teaching and research facilities, which benefit from our record of attracting large research grants.
There are approximately 1,600 undergraduate students and more than 400 postgraduate students enrolled on courses at the School. We offer a wide range of postgraduate degree programmes to suit the needs of our students. There is a vibrant research culture within the School and we pride ourselves on conducting research that has valuable real world applications that help to solve modern engineering problems.
We are committed to promoting diversity and equal opportunities for both our students and our staff. We currently hold an Athena Swan Bronze Award and participate in a number of initiatives championing women in engineering.
The School is internationally recognised for its research and in the latest Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) the School's quality of research was ranked 1st in the UK for Civil Engineering and 7th for General Engineering (encompassing Mechanical, Electrical and Electronic Engineering). We were also ranked as the top university for the impact of our research in all areas. Many of our academic staff members are engaged in large-scale and internationally-recognised or world-leading research projects and maintain close links with industry through these projects.
The School conducts research across a range of areas:
Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Energy, Medical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials, Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering.
Within these areas you will find that there are a wealth of topics that would suit a PhD or MPhil project.
Our MSc Courses
We offer a wide range of taught postgraduate degree programmes across the engineering disciplines which will enable you to specialise in a particular area. Our taught postgraduate degree programmes are carefully designed together with our industrial partners to enable you to upgrade your engineering knowledge and maximise your skills. This makes our taught courses an ideal way of enhancing your employability.
All of our established MSc programmes are accredited by the relevant professional institution except the Communications Technology and Entrepreneurship MSc which is a specialist course run jointly with the Business School and the Alacrity Foundation. They are balanced programmes with a major research element and many have a strong industrial element in both the taught content and student research projects. Many of our MSc degrees are available either as full-time or part-time courses.
