What’s it like being a postgraduate business student?
The simple answer to this is…exciting!
As an MSc International Business student you are constantly being challenged, asked to explore new ideas and work with a host of inspiring people. Currently, I study at Brunel University London, and the course offers the perfect mix of business modules that equip you for the real world with a high level of business acumen. Being a postgraduate business student also gives you the chance to participate in great talks and discussions, which are stimulating, sometimes mind-boggling, but most importantly thought provoking! It has honestly been one of the best decisions I have made.
Throughout the course so far I have worked in many groups, plus I have successfully managed to lead teamwork. The beauty of it is that with a course like International Business, there is naturally going to be diversity amongst the students, which is fantastic. On my course there certainly is! This means you gain so much cultural awareness and learn some interesting facts from others from all across the globe. In today’s market this is really useful as you are highly likely going to work with people from a range of countries. So this cultural familiarity is priceless!
What’s more, taking the step to study further at a postgraduate level is great in the long term, it shows you have the mechanics to develop yourself and effectively become a master in your field. Doing so, enables you to refine on your skill set and build on your industry knowledge. I do often think though, can I learn what I am learning through experience in the workforce? Especially as it is a business masters? Potentially I could, yet this knowledge may not be as advanced as the knowledge gained from studying an MSc, and it certainly wouldn’t provide all the engaging talks from world-renowned speakers.
What’s more, being a postgrad student in general can be fun, sure there is a lot of work… a ton of reading but don’t forget being a student is great! There are so many perks and opportunities to get involved in! From socialising and being involved in societies, not to mention getting a student discount again!
For anyone out there wondering whether it is worth studying at a postgraduate level you need to consider it properly. Education is such a powerful tool and the ability to gain an immense amount of knowledge at a postgraduate level is fantastic. To those considering a business postgraduate qualification, I would advise you to go for it now, as it could yield a more fruitful future!
