How to make your PG student house feel like home
Even if your postgraduate course is only going to last a year it is still worth your time and money finding a decent student home.
A nice place to come back to that feels homely and relaxing will help you wind down from your studies. It will also be much more conducive to your studies if you are living somewhere that you feel comfortable.
Let’s take a look at some of the ways you can make your postgraduate house feel like home.
Choose the right type of place
Make sure you have considered what you need and want from your postgraduate student accommodation. Do you need other people to chat with at the end of the day or would you rather have space to yourself? There are lots of options and the student digs available from private student accommodation providers Fresh cover all bases, from halls of residence-style living to self-contained flats.
Take a few things from home
Once you’ve found your accommodation, bring along a few things from home, like a few photos or a favourite lamp or blanket. It depends on how far you are travelling and how much space you have to pack as to what you can take with you to make you feel at home. Fresh gives you a good idea of what your accommodation will look like online and this makes it easier to plan things you'd like to bring.
Keep it in good order
This is easier said than done when you're a busy postgraduate student, but if you keep your postgraduate accommodation tidy, when you’re super stressed you'll be pleased it's tidy. If you are sharing with other students make a rota with them to ensure you all keep the place in good order – this will be a condition of rental and will also help to make your student home a happy one.
Get to know your housemates & neighbours
If you are living in close proximity to others it’s important to build a good relationship with them. This is super simple if you choose accommodation with Fresh as they organise events and social evenings for their residents. It's much easier to relax when you know the people around you and a friendly hello might be just what you need when the course gets tough.
Put aside cash to buy a couple of homely extras
When you get to your accommodation you will spot that you are missing a few things – having a little cash in the planning stages of your budgeting will make your house a home. Fresh helps out by letting you pre-order these little extra touches – like lamps and bedding – online and have them delivered on the day you move in. This is particularly helpful if you are coming from overseas.
Choose accommodation from a good landlord
If you are renting your student accommodation, it’s important to make sure you get it from a reputable landlord. Fresh has people onsite to help deal with any problems you might be having with your accommodation. Safety and security are a priority for Fresh, so you don't have to worry about windows that don't lock properly or the behaviour of your neighbours.
A little forethought and planning will mean that your postgraduate student house will feel like home, even if it's just for a year.
