Course overview

This course offers a broad study of language and linguistics, helping you to apply and develop theoretical models and frameworks in language study. Many students on this course are already working as English teachers, either in the UK or abroad.

We will explore areas including:

  • Syllabus design and methodology

  • Vocabulary teaching and learning

  • Intercultural communication

  • Discourse analysis

  • Research methods in applied linguistics

You will study English language teaching from multiple perspectives, including second language acquisition, motivation and individual learner differences, psycholinguistics, discourse analysis, and corpus linguistics.

Course materials and teaching are all delivered online over 'Moodle', our virtual learning environment. You will have access to many online resources, including:

  • e-books

  • textbooks

  • articles

  • teaching notes

  • recorded materials

  • links to further reading and resources

  • online communications channels (e.g. Microsoft Teams)

You will also have your own module tutor for each module that you take. They are there to support you with the academic content and your academic development.
