Summary
We offer PhD supervision in a wide range of disciplines within the area of Portuguese and Lusophone Studies, with staff expertise which spans literary and cultural studies, visual culture and history related to Portugal, Brazil and Lusophone Africa.
Having completed a masters degree and agreed your research topic with a supervisor, you will continue to explore themes relating to Portugal, Brazil and Lusophone Africa.
Our specialisms include:

Literature and culture in Portugal, Brazil and Lusophone Africa from the 19th century to the present day

Political and intellectual history of Portugal and Lusophone Africa

History of Brazil (especially slavery)

Culture and visual culture of Lusophone Africa and the Portuguese diaspora (cinema, popular culture)
Our department has significant links with: Centre for the Study of Post Conflict Societies - An interdisciplinary group focusing on cultures which have emerged in the aftermath of conflict.
Attending research seminars and special lectures will be an important part of your doctoral journey. You will also have the opportunity to deliver papers of your own. The culmination of your work will be a thesis that makes a significant contribution to research of the Hispanic or Lusophone worlds.
The University of Nottingham is one of eight universities making up the AHRC-funded Midlands4Cities Doctoral Training Partnership (M4C). The partnership provides funding and training to support the professional and personal development of the next generation of arts and humanities doctoral researchers.
