The Master of Architecture (MArch) programme is accredited as an RIBA Part 2 award, and is a professional/undergraduate Masters qualification available to students with a BA/BSc in Architecture and RIBA Part I (we will consider other 1st Class degrees based on folio and experience as stated above). This degree is validated by the RIBA and prescribed by ARB as a Part 2 qualification towards access to the Architectural Profession in Europe.
Candidates should be aware that those who do not have RIBA Part 1 on joining the MArch here at Liverpool, may apply to the Architects Registration Board (ARB ) upon MArch course completion to be considered for RIBA Part 1 (for a fee payable to ARB). The University of Liverpool has no say in this process, which is undertaken independently by the candidate.
Year 1 focuses on design through lectures, seminars and carefully planned individual and group work. Taught modules outside studio design cover professional practice and contemporary approaches to technology.
You'll then begin the second year with a design project that's set, reviewed, and taught by a notable practitioner or design practice. In 2019-20 this was Ian Ritchie Architects.
The programme builds towards the Design Thesis, where you’ll produce a major piece of work in response to your own brief. The dissertation subject will reflect your personal interests.
You'll be taught by our full time staff and by selected practitioners and Honorary Professors. These included Ian Ritchie and Hans Van De Heijden in 2019/20. We’ve a very generous offering of prizes for students performing strongly in areas of our MArch degree.
Students may take Semester 1 of Year 2 abroad at one of our approved exchange Schools of Architecture in China, Australia or Europe.
Master of Architecture - MArch (Hons)
|Level||RQF Level 7|
To be offered a place on the programme, you will normally need to have a BA or BSc degree (with Honours) in Architecture at 2.1 level or above. Candidates who do not meet these requirements will be considered on their individual merits and should discuss their particular circumstances with the Programme Director and the Admissions Officer.
All applicants must have RIBA Part 1 as a pre-requisite. Applicants from non-accredited schools must have a 1st Class classification and submit a portfolio consisting of 10 pages of images from their final year project. Portfolios must be verified by the schools in which the applicant was awarded the degree.
For candidates who do not meet the criteria for consideration for the MArch degree at the University of Liverpool there is an opportunity to apply for the Master of Architectural Design at XJTLU in Suzhou, near Shanghai in China. All courses are taught in English and the two year Master course offers excellent teaching and support facilities. The course received full RIBA validation in November 2017.
If you're interested in this option and would like to apply, please visit the XJTLU website for more information.
