Summary
Our broadening of expertise and reputation was reflected by the QS World University Subject Ratings 2020 (https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/university-subject-rankings/2020/performing-arts), where the University of Huddersfield received a 5-star rating for Performing Arts.
A PhD is the highest academic award. This programme allows you to explore and pursue a research project that is built around a substantial research question and leads to an original contribution to knowledge.
A full-time PhD is a three-year programme (often with a fourth year for "writing up"). During this time you will have the opportunity to develop your research skills by taking part in training courses, events, and seminars. You will have one main supervisor as well as one or more secondary supervisors, who will guide and support you across all phases of the programme. At the same time, you will have significant independence in conducting your research.
The PhD culminates in the production of a large-scale piece of written thesis. This is standardly up to 80,000 words but may be closer to 40,000 words where live performance and/or its documentation (often in the form of video) make up a significant part of the thesis.
Your final thesis will be examined by an appointed panel of experts in the field. On successful completion, you will be awarded your degree. The awarding of the PhD means that you are prepared to conduct research independently.

MA (Res)
Summary
A Master of Arts (MA) by Research allows you to undertake a one-year (full-time) or two-year (part-time) research degree. It contains little or no formal taught component. This type of study gives you the chance to explore a research topic over a shorter time than a more in-depth doctoral programme.
Our research degrees are available as full-time, part-time and some are offered distance learning.
Research Master's students choose a specific project to work on and have a greater degree of independence in their work than is the case with a taught Master’s course.
You’ll be expected to work to an approved programme of work which you will develop in conjunction with your supervisor within the first few months of starting your studies. Whilst undertaking the research project you will also develop your research skills by taking part in training courses and events.
You will be appointed a main supervisor who will normally be part of a supervisory team, comprising up to three members to advise and support you on your project.
At the end of the project you’ll write up your findings in the form of a short thesis of around 25,000 words, which will then be examined. We also accept applications for projects which are practice-orientated, and which include portfolio submissions. These include practice submissions with written components. You will receive guidance from your supervisory team as to the percentage equivalents between the practice and written elements of your research.
On successful completion, you will be awarded your degree and if you have enjoyed this taste of research, you may then decide to apply for the full research doctoral degree (PhD).

Summary
Our broadening of expertise and reputation was reflected by the QS World University Subject Ratings 2020 (https://www.topuniversities.com/university-rankings/university-subject-rankings/2020/performing-arts), where the University of Huddersfield received a 5-star rating for Performing Arts.
A Master's by Research (MA) allows you to undertake a one-year (full-time) research degree. It contains little or no formal taught component. This type of study gives you the chance to explore a clearly defined research topic over a shorter time than a more in-depth doctoral programme.
Research Master's students choose a specific project to work on and have a greater degree of independence in their work than is the case with a taught Master’s course.
You’ll be expected to work according to an approved programme, which you will develop in conjunction with your supervisor during the first few months of starting your studies. While undertaking this research project you will also have the opportunity to develop your research skills by taking part in training courses, events, and seminars. Your research supervisor will advise and support you across all phases of the programme, from start to finish.
At the end of the course you will write up your findings in the form of an MA thesis. This is standardly up to 25,000 words but may be closer to 12,500 words where live performance and/or its documentation (often in the form of video) make up a significant part of the thesis.
Your final thesis will be examined by an appointed panel of experts in the field. On successful completion, you will be awarded your degree. Having a Master’s degree can be useful in many different professional and artistic situations. You may also then decide to undertake a doctoral degree (PhD).
