This course is moving into one of our new buildings at City campus. Teaching will mainly be delivered at our Collegiate campus until December 2024 while we get our new facilities ready. From January 2025 you will study in brand new facilities at City campus.

Course summary - Study the core foundations of legal knowledge, values and enterprise skills.

You’ll learn and apply the law practically throughout the course – working with professionals and the public through our range of award-winning advice clinics. While developing excellent legal foundational knowledge and skills, you’ll be able to build your legal interests, values and aspirations – preparing you for graduate careers in and beyond the legal sector.

How you learn All our courses are designed around a set of key principles based on engaging you with the world, collaborating with others, challenging you to think in new ways, and providing you with a supportive environment in which you can thrive.

Our award-winning tutors are experts in their fields. You’ll be taught by lecturers who are experienced legal researchers, and who have years of experience in the legal profession as solicitors, barristers and legal advisers.

You’ll collaborate with legal professionals and rights and justice practitioners to challenge law and its application, engaging with projects and initiatives which are making a difference in Sheffield, the UK and globally.

You learn through: - Lectures and interactive workshops.

  • Case studies in both simulated and live client environments.

  • Work placements.

Key themes Throughout the course, you’ll have the opportunity to learn foundational aspects of the law and the unique opportunity to test and apply this knowledge while advising clients and the public. You’ll work alongside practising solicitors and other professionals in areas such as criminal appeals, family law, civil disputes and gender justice.

The course also provides opportunities for formative and developmental assessment and feedback – as well as aspects of flexibility and personalisation in assessment tasks to enable you to achieve to the best of your abilities. Your assessments are designed to be authentic, relating to real-world experiences to improve your graduate skills and outcomes.

Course support You’ll be supported in your learning journey towards highly skilled postgraduate employment in a number of ways. These include:

Employability opportunities such as project work, networking and field trips, and expert advice and guidance from our careers and employability team. Our student and staff-led steering group, Manifest Diversity, ensures the promotion of minority student voices. Applied learning Your course has been designed to embrace real-world challenges and provide you with the practical skills and knowledge to be successful within your chosen sector.

Work placements Throughout the course you’ll gain vital industry experience working alongside lawyers on real projects. The course is designed to develop your practical legal skills to support and prepare you to participate in work with legal service providers and their clients.

Live projects After your essential foundational preparation in legal research and study, you’ll then work on real cases and projects in one or more of our Justice Hubs, our on-campus legal service providers, or with external organisations.
