Summary
This MSc Criminology is developed for students wanting to make a positive impact on society by gaining a comprehensive understanding of criminal behaviour, law enforcement and the criminal justice system.
You will be equipped with a specialist and interdisciplinary understanding of topics related to crime, social order and deviance from a variety of backgrounds, including criminology, sociology and social and legal psychology and will gain skills that will enable you to progress to a career related to eg. criminal justice, security, or in academia.
The course consists of core modules in criminology and combine these with specialist modules in applied criminology. The curriculum covers real life issues such as domestic abuse, youth violence and aggression, criminal governance, police legitimisation, collective action, gender and social change. The dissertation on this course will include a placement in an organisation such as HM Prisons or youth centres.
The Department of Law and Criminology is home to a number of research areas, and you’ll be taught by academics who are experts in their fields. Areas of research include crime and punishment, families and children and our Institute for the Study of Power, Crime and Society, which is dedicated to studying illegal and criminal dynamics of power in the broader social context.
Through the MSc Criminology: Applied Criminology you’ll:
