Summary
The Professional Graduate Diploma in Education (Music) is a vocational programme for graduates who aspire to teach music in secondary schools. On this programme, you will engage with intensive studies in education (professional studies), 90 days of school placement and specialised music studies.
Following graduation, you will qualify for provisional registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS). All eligible graduates are guaranteed a probationary year of classroom teaching. GTCS standards are recognised in the UK and internationally.
Professional Studies Professional Studies will focus on your developing identity as a teacher: exploring issues related to learning and teaching in Scotland; key issues about how children learn and teacher professionalism including the GTCS Standard for Provisional Registration.
Placement Subject specialist lectures will prepare you for placements and give you an opportunity to develop skills required for teaching music. Placements will be in different schools where you will be supported by music teachers and an RCS School Experience Tutor. School placements are normally offered within reasonable travelling distance of your term-time address.
Specialist Music Studies Specialist music studies are designed to support your work in the classroom. You will study and practice a number of specialist music pedagogies (e.g. Kodaly, Orff, Dalcroze) as well as building on and reconceptualising your previous studies in music for the classroom context.
Please note, while you will perform your principal study as part of your entrance audition, this will not be part of the teaching on the course.
