Summary

The School of Politics and International Relations at Queen Mary has a vibrant PhD student community and we welcome applications in all fields of politics and international relations where we can offer expert supervision. Student numbers have increased significantly in the past ten years and the school currently hosts around 40 full- and part-time MPhil and PhD students. The School has an excellent track record in research. It is in the UK’s top 15 for the excellence of its published work and top twenty for research intensity. 74% of its research was considered world leading and internationally excellent in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF).

The School is part of the prestigious London Interdisciplinary Social Science Doctoral Training Partnership (LISS DTP), funded by the Economic and Social Research Council, run jointly by QMUL, King’s College and Imperial College, London. This Partnership provides generous funding for research students, as well as research training and seminar programmes. The School is also part of the London Arts & Humanities Partnership AHRC (LAHP DTP) that provides funding for PhD applications in the arts and humanities. Funding is also available through the QMUL Principal’s Studentships scheme.

The School also leads the interdisciplinary Queen Mary University of London Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholarships (QMUL-LTDS) Programme in collaboration with other Schools in the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. This offers fully funded QMUL-LTDS Doctoral Scholarships on the theme of ‘Mobile People: mobility as a way of life’. This includes research in the fields of migration studies, refugee studies and citizenship studies in the disciplines of Economics, Geography, History, International Relations, Law, Linguistics, Politics and Psychology. The Leverhulme Trust Doctoral Scholarships award builds on QMUL’s unique, agent-centred research in the humanities, social and cognitive sciences on human mobility as a global norm rather than an exception, and on the impact of mobile people on social and political institutions such as citizenship, democracy, nationality, and security.

Research students benefit from expert supervision from academic staff within the School. Some students are also co-supervised by staff from other Schools within Queen Mary.

Applications are welcome in any of the specialist subject areas covered by the School:
