University of Birmingham launches MSc in Responsible Data Science

University of BirminghamThe University of Birmingham has launched a new MSc in Responsible Data Science – it is the first university to launch a masters level qualification that brings together law and data science.

The MSc in Responsible Data Science has been co-created by Birmingham Law School and the School of Computer Science, and combines data science with the capacity to understand and reflect upon the social, ethical, and political implications of data-driven applications. It is a one-year program that includes a fully-funded semester in industry, ensuring graduates will be career-ready with a unique set of skills and experiences.

This new MSc course has been specifically designed to fill the data science skills gap in the legal profession, and has been created with industry partners including Accenture, the Black Solicitors Network and leading law firms. It also has backing from the Office for Students who are funding 16 scholarships worth £10,000 to support under-represented groups to access the MSc in Responsible Data Science – these scholarships are available to students who identify as female, BAME, or who have a registered disability. 

Professor Karen Yeung, Interdisciplinary Professorial Fellow in Law, Ethics and Informatics at the University of Birmingham, explains, “With our partners, we are developing the next generation of lawyers, who understand both the fundamentals of data science and the core legal, ethical and regulatory implications in real-world settings.”

Meanwhile, Clare Ranson, Director of Employment Law at Accenture, says, “Today’s talent shortages will only become more pronounced, as rapid digital innovation continues to change the demand for future skills. We are delighted to work with the University of Birmingham, and other partners, to address this growing gap in data science and the law, anticipating what skills will be required and helping to create a dynamic, diverse workforce.”
