UK rejoins Erasmus+
At the end of last year, it was announced that the UK would be rejoining Erasmus+ in 2027 – and the UK and EU policymakers have now legally formalised the deal.
Erasmus+ supports students and other young people across Europe to help with education, training and mobility across the region. This month’s formal agreement sees the UK rejoining the European Union’s flagship education funding program six years after its departure following Brexit.
The British Council is going to be the UK’s National Agency for Erasmus+, Chief Executive Scott McDonald explains, “The program will be of enormous benefit to a range of people from different backgrounds throughout the UK, giving them a global outlook and a whole range of skills of value both to themselves and to the UK.”
Speaking about the formalised deal, Director of Universities UK International, Jamie Arrowsmith, says, “With the UK now a full member of the Erasmus+ program, UK organisations will be able to access the full scope of Erasmus+ funding and activity, including student and staff mobility, cooperation projects, joint master's programmes, policy-focused initiatives and participation in European Universities alliances.”
He adds, “The announcement provides important clarity for program delivery ahead of UK participation in 2027, supporting institutions across higher education, further education and wider sectors to engage with Erasmus+ opportunities and plan with greater confidence.”
This announcement has been widely accepted as a very positive development, providing exciting opportunities to young people and students from across the UK. Minister for Skills, Jacqui Smith, says, “Generations of people have benefited from the opportunities working and studying abroad offers, and I’m so pleased that today’s students, apprentices, educators and young people can experience all Europe has to offer.”
