Discover how the English language has developed historically, how pronunciation varies from place to place, and how linguistic analysis of literary texts project text worlds and characters.

English Language at Lancaster University has a long tradition in producing world-leading teaching and research in a broad range of sub-disciplines. We offer a unique combination of large-scale empirical expertise in areas such as corpus methods and phonetics, as well as historical linguistics, discourse analysis and literary stylistics.

This English Language MA programme, founded over 10 years ago, focuses on the description and explanation of the English language, including its structure, functions and social contexts of use. English language here refers to the linguistic study of English as an academic subject, not the practice of English.

We have a tried and tested formula, devised to accommodate busy people (most of our students have full-time jobs). The scheme is part-time, taking place over three years (modules in the first two years, dissertation in the third year). It is designed to appeal to a wide audience (including UK teachers of the English Language A level). Each of the six modules, spread over two years, begins with a compulsory Saturday face-to-face session at Lancaster University and is completed in distance mode. Assessment is via coursework. The final year involves a dissertation supported by one-to-one distance meetings with a specially allocated supervisor.

Online learning

The course is delivered via Lancaster’s high quality virtual learning site and includes online seminars and tutorials. You will have access to the University’s extensive online library resources. There will be plenty of opportunities to interact with peers and academics, and to engage with the department’s academic community.

  • Free-standing modules*

Each of the modules on this scheme can also be taken individually, without registering for the programme as a whole. You will be awarded a certificate for the successful completion of the module you have chosen. In other words, if you specifically wish to establish a foundation for English grammar or Phonetics, or tap into the latest developments in stylistics and discourse analysis, you can do so. If you enjoy a module, you can sign up for further modules or enrol for the whole scheme (the modules you have taken will be credited to your Masters programme). Please contact us if you are interested in taking individual modules.
