Kent’s School of Biosciences ranks among the most active in biological sciences in the UK, with annual research funding in excess of £4 million. We have invested in new, specialist, teaching and research laboratories which house over 150 academic, research, technical and support staff, as well as around 100 postgraduate students.
The School offers a vibrant, research-led teaching experience by staff whose research has gained national and international recognition. Applications for our research degrees at Master’s and PhD level are welcome. Our key research strengths underpin a range of unique and career-focused taught Master’s programmes which focus on areas such as:
- Cancer Biology and Therapeutics
- Biotechnology and Bioengineering
- Infectious Diseases
- Reproductive Medicine: Science and Ethics
- Biotechnology and Business
These Master’s programmes address key issues and challenges within the biosciences and pharmaceutical industries. They are accredited by the Royal Society of Biology and prepare graduates for future employment. The School was ranked 21st overall by the Complete University Guide 2020 and was ranked 6th for graduate prospects. The School was also placed 7th in the UK for research intensity in the most recent Research Excellence Framework.

The School is well equipped, with excellent research laboratories, together with a range of specialised research facilities. The School houses an imaging suite providing high-resolution laser confocal and electron microscopy. Our state-of-the-art 600 MHz NMR spectrometer NMR spectrometer was recently upgraded via an equipment research award from the Wellcome Trust.
An active school
Every week Biosciences has school seminars with world-leading expert guest speakers presenting their research. In addition, the department runs FIREBio (Forum for Innovation, Research and Enterprise in Biosciences), which is a weekly informal meeting for staff, postdocs and postgraduates involving short presentations and discussions. Postgraduates can use the opportunity to present unpublished research findings and discuss them in a supportive environment.
Postgraduate students are strongly encouraged to contribute to the School’s flourishing outreach programme with the local community, and to benefit from the transferable skills it provides. The School of Biosciences blog provides insight into our activities.

Funding and scholarships
The School of Biosciences offers a range of Funding and Scholarships for eligible students. The University is has a Multimillion-pound postgraduate scholarship fund.
You can apply online via the University’s website. There is no fixed application deadline for applications from home/EU students, though we strongly recommend you apply as soon as possible; no later than three months before your intended start date. For international students the deadline for applications is 31 July 2020.
