The Department of Engineering comprises more than 60 academic staff and post-doctoral researchers, supported by an experienced technical team and a wide range of specialist equipment and resources.
Our skills, expertise and experience are broad and span multiple disciplines, including:
- Product design and engineering
- Computer and network engineering
- Mechanical engineering
- Electrical and electronic engineering.
We strive to align our research to the needs and challenges of industry and society, ensuring our research has a wide impact. Teaching and learning in the school are employability-focused, with a focus on practical skills and knowledge that reflects what students will do in engineering roles when they graduate.

From healthcare engineering to new security screening techniques, our research has real-world impact and spans the breadth of modern engineering.
Research in the department focuses on solving practical problems through the expertise and experience of our academic staff. We work closely with industry partners both locally and nationally and are active in Knowledge Transfer Partnership schemes.
Research facilities include a dedicated £4m heavy engineering workshop for research in surface engineering, materials and dynamics and a £3m building housing our specialist facilities for work on bioengineering, exercise science and genetics.
