Coventry University: Industrial Product Design
|Institution||Coventry University View institution profile|
|Department||School of Mechanical, Aerospace and Automotive Engineering|
During the first semester, you will expand your creative skills and capabilities, exploring creative and innovation methods, research methods, co-design practice, user-centred thinking and presentation. This will involve an intense learning experience of creative practice through projects set by external industry partners on associated creative design and design management courses.
The second semester concentrates of building your technical engineering and industrial product design skills. You will participate in experimentation and prototyping on a more detail focused level than the initial stage of project concept generation. This requires detailed knowledge of the relevant materials, manufacture and product construction, as well as understanding of working and communicating with other stakeholders and processes of the development that operate parallel to design. During this semester, you will also define the scope of your final project in consultation with your tutor.
You will conduct your research informed design brief in the final semester with your final presentation accompanied by a comprehensive research report and poster justifying the design, research journey and outcomes.
**Why choose this course?**
Within rapidly evolving, highly competitive internationalised markets, our Master’s recognises the need for multi-skilled designers who are masters of creativity, transdisciplinary communication and collaboration.
Inspired by staff who will share their significant experience of designing products and advising the likes of Philips, Canon and Samsung, you will have opportunities to participate in industry visits, international study trips, ‘live’ client briefs and international competitions. Previous students won the awards for ‘Best of Best Concept’ and ‘Best Concept’ in the prestigious Red Dot Awards in 2014, which resulted in Coventry becoming the only UK university in Red Dot’s illustrious top 15 ranking for higher education institutions in America and Europe. Alumni of the course have also gone on to win Red Dot Awards for their designs in professional practice.
We have invested substantially in rapid prototyping equipment, including a Kyla 2700 robot milling machine and a range of 3D printing machines, allowing you to experiment and realise your ideas to deliver verified products for production. You can produce prototypes of moulded and cast parts quickly and cheaply, mirroring the professional environments, structures and methods in which user-end products are created.
