Student Blog: What's it really like to study a business masters?

My name is George and I am studying for a postgraduate degree in Macroeconomics and Financial Markets at Barcelona Graduate School of Economics.

In my opinion this program has exceeded my initial expectations with respect to the course content and academic quality for several reasons. Before enrolling for the program, I gleaned all the information I could get about it from Barcelona GSE’s website, but I didn’t realise that I wouldn’t actually have time to draw breath when the program actually started! The program is so rigorous and different from how I have studied in my home country – but the reality is that it has turned me into a good computer programmer and economist to boot, especially with respect to quantitative analysis in Matlab.

One of the most rigorous and challenging aspects of the program is the weekly assignment we are expected to do. One professor actually quipped that we are not meant to be having too much fun in Barcelona and that they will see to that! That said, Barcelona is a fantastic city to be a student in and it has a great international presence.

This second semester is even better for me now I have settled down in the city – and I even have some spare time to engage in my favorite pastime which is playing drums with a local band group. In fact I recently played for a Catalonia independence political rally!

Most of the modules I am studying this semester have a lot to do with programming which is an area I am really interested in. This postgraduate program is making a proper economist out of me and I am enjoying every bit of it, although it is very challenging and tests every bit of my intellectual ability – the learning curve has really been very steep.

Would I encourage anyone to undertake this venture? Many times over especially if you have similar aspirations to me!
