Summary
This programme is currently the only master’s level qualification delivered in Scotland specialising in forensic mental health.
The programme is designed for those who are currently, or who are looking to be employed in a forensic setting—such as a secure hospital, community based service for mentally disordered offenders, the Scottish Prison Service or Police Scotland.
The course consists of core modules set within a framework of interrelated themes that focus on the assessment, treatment and management of patients within a forensic mental health context.
Throughout this programme you will study topics including:
- Mental disorder and the law
- Forensic risk assessment and risk management
- Drugs and alcohol
- Managing mental health through the criminal justice system
- Problem behaviours
- Forensic treatments and interventions
- Research for health and social care

Entry requirements | You should normally hold an appropriate Ordinary bachelor's degree in a health (but not exclusively) related field. NON STANDARD ENTRY: Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient professional or practice based experience to undertake their chosen study, for example, two years' experience working in a mental health or forensic mental health context where they are required to provide written reports. A progression route also exists from the short module Forensic mental Health run at New College Lanarkshire, Motherwell Campus and from the Graduate Certificate in Personality Disorder course at UWS. To be considered through this route, you must have a pass rate in excess of 60%. |

Delivered jointly by UWS and the School of Forensic Mental Health this part-time programme is the only Scottish Masters programme specialising in Forensic Mental Health. It offers a unique opportunity to advance your knowledge and enhance your skills. Graduates will be equipped with the confidence to excel in any forensic mental health setting. The programme is designed for those who are currently, or who are looking to be employed in a forensic setting—such as a secure hospital, community based service for mentally disordered offenders, Scottish Prison Service or Police Scotland. It is suitable for professionals with backgrounds in nursing, social care, psychology, occupational therapy, psychiatry, criminal justice and security.

Entry requirements | Applicants should normally possess an appropriate undergraduate degree in a health (but not exclusively) related field. Other Required Qualifications/Experience: Admission is permitted with relevant previous academic credit and/or prior learning. This will be in accordance with the University of the West of Scotland Regulatory Framework (Regulation 6.7, 2016/17). Applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient professional or practice based experience to undertake their chosen study, for example, two years experience working in a mental health or forensic mental health context where they are required to provide written reports. A potential progression route exists from the Short Forensic Module at New College Lanarkshire, Motherwell Campus and from the Graduate Certificate in Personality Disorder course at UWS. The one condition of students being accepted via these routes is a pass rate of 60% or above. |
