Summary

What is special about this course? Are you interested in developing your general engineering knowledge and skills? If so, this programme could be for you.

The course will develop your understanding of the roles of research, design, analysis and optimisation in advanced engineering careers. You will gain the knowledge and understanding to apply existing and emerging technology and gain the appropriate theoretical and practical methods to design, develop, manufacture, construct, commission, operate and maintain engineering products, processes, systems and services.

Specialist modules will allow you to pursue areas of particular interest to you and may include: study of advanced mechanical engineering topics such as fluid flow, aerodynamics, tensor stress, and parametric analysis; study of advanced mechanical engineering systems such as intermittent combustion or continuous combustion engines, and hypersonic propulsion; study of finite element modelling theory and application of mechanical engineering software analysis packages such as MATLAB or ANSYS; study of advanced applications of mathematical solutions for engineering problems such as transfer function approaches, state space methodology and stability analyses; application of optimisation approaches to the design of mechanical engineering systems; and a mechanical engineering design project.

This programme has been accredited by the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) as meeting the UK Engineering Council requirements for the Further Learning portion of Chartered Engineer (CEng) professional registration. In order to meet the educational requirements in full for Chartered Engineer registration, graduates will also need to present an accredited level 6 qualification or equivalent, and meet specific membership and professional achievement criteria specific to the professional body through which application for professional registration is made.

Special features ◾The course is delivered fully online, allowing you the flexibility to fit your studies around your personal and professional commitments. ◾Provides a combination of general engineering knowledge and specialisation in mechanical engineering knowledge and understanding to prepare you to apply existing and emerging technology. ◾You will develop your ability to demonstrate effective graduate skills and a personal commitment to professional standards, recognising obligations to society, the profession and the environment. ◾Opportunity to study individual modules for personal or professional development, or work towards a PgCert, PgDip, or full masters degree.

How long will my course last? ◾Full-time: 18 months: MSc ◾Part-time: 3 years: MSc

Please note that UHI North Highland, UHI Outer Hebrides and UHI West Highland have changed their names to become UHI North, West and Hebrides. This will not impact on your choice of course or how and where you will study.
