Summary
Expedition and wilderness medicine is a new and rapidly evolving specialty. Increasingly, the remote areas of the world are being explored by organised travel, small groups and societies. Whether a charity event scaling Mount Kilimanjaro, a bike ride across North America or filming in Patagonia, there is increasingly a need for these expeditions to be accompanied by a healthcare professional. Using over a decade of experience in the delivery of online, award-winning, postgraduate courses, this course has been developed to help healthcare professionals acquire the requisite skills in this emerging specialty.
The Expedition and Wilderness Medicine course has been designed for any health professional who is interested in developing their credentials in the specialty. This course is not intended to cater to the elite medic who intends to single-handedly trek to the South Pole but is focused on developing the role of the healthcare professional interested in delivering clinical support to expeditions and travel to remote locations.
Our experienced faculty focus upon the practicalities of preparing for the expedition and also on the physiological and pathological impacts of expedition in remote and extreme locations.
Level | RQF Level 7 |

Postgraduate Diploma - PgDip
Summary
Travel for both work and pleasure is becoming increasingly prevalent. In this emerging market, current job adverts are asking for doctors and other healthcare professionals (HCPs) with training, experience and specialization in wilderness and expedition medicine. Examples may include adventure holidays, charity work and overseas employment - scenarios could be anything from climate research expeditions, treks and charity work to going into space.
This online course is run with the collaborative partner Diploma MSc. On successful completion you will become a leader in the field of Expedition and Wilderness Medicine, and can go on to study the MSc in Expedition and Wilderness Medicine.
Our courses are conducted entirely online through self-directed distance learning. You’ll receive guidance throughout your course with tutor-stimulated academic discussions, which are based on clinically-rich case scenarios. These usually occur within groups of 10-15 students, allowing you to clearly communicate with both your tutor and fellow students.
You will also participate in a combination of module activities that may be group and/or individual based, dependent on the module. These innovative teaching methods enable you to envisage the translation of your studies into your every day work and practice.
Due to the online nature of the course, you will be expected to regularly login and participate in the course - ideally on a daily basis. Students are recommended to spend around two hours per day on their studies.
