Summary
Examine the properties of materials used in the dental field. Understand how this knowledge is applied to impact clinical interventions and design new dental technology applications.
**Course description**
This course explores the fundamental science behind a wide range of materials, and how this knowledge is applied in dentistry. You will examine the properties of different materials, why these features make them useful to dentists, and how this understanding is used in the production of dental technology.
Topics range from the history of dental materials to the latest advances in digital dentistry and tissue engineering. You will learn about the scientific, legal and practical issues that need to be considered when choosing, evaluating and developing dental materials. You will also cover the production processes behind treatment options such as fixed restorations or removable prosthodontics and orthodontics.
The course is led by experts from both the School of Clinical Dentistry, where staff develop new clinical interventions and work directly with patients, and the Department of Materials Science and Engineering, which studies the fundamental science of matter and its applications. As part of the degree, you will complete a scientific research training programme and work closely with researchers from one of these areas on your own research project.

Summary
Prepare yourself for a career in the growing and innovative field of dental materials science.
**Course description**
This non-clinical course is run jointly with the Faculty of Engineering. It gives you a comprehensive education in basic materials science and the use of materials in dentistry and surgery.
You’ll be taught by some of the leading academics in the fields of bio and dental materials science, tissue engineering, materials characterisation and biomedical engineering. You’ll also learn the principles of research and different techniques for evaluating dental materials and related health technologies.
There is a need for clinicians and non-clinicians to gain skills and expertise in these fields so they have a deep understanding of the science underpinning the use of materials in dentistry.
You’ll have the opportunity to enhance your academic and scientific skills, including building on your knowledge of basic sciences to increase your understanding of the interaction between the biological environment and materials used in dentistry.
You’ll also be introduced to the principles of scientific research methodology and explore how dental materials science and related technologies are used to repair, replace or help regenerate tissues in dentistry.
Once you’ve graduated, you’ll be able to recognise the clinical, technical and scientific rationale for the use of materials and related technologies in dentistry, and how scientific principles can be applied to the study and development of dental materials. You’ll also understand how the use of materials and related technologies in dentistry are affected by medical, social, legal, and demographic factors.
