Summary

Matters of health are simultaneously matters of society and culture. The MA in Health, Cultures and Societies provides an exciting opportunity to explore issues around health, illness, wellbeing, and medicine, and acquire advanced training in associated methods within a critical practice-oriented framework distinctive to the University and the city of Liverpool.

Closely linked to the Centre for Health, Medical and Environmental Humanities, the MA in Health, Cultures and Societies is an enthusiastically cross-disciplinary initiative focused on Environmental Humanities, Arts and Mental Health and Critical Medical Humanities.

If you enrol for the programme you will benefit from research-connected teaching in a wide range of disciplines, including Archaeology, Anthropology, Classics, English, Geography, History, Law, Literature, Music, Medicine, Psychology, Public Health, and Sociology, among others. The MA in Health, Cultures and Societies prepares you for innovative research within, between and beyond these disciplines. In addition, as a graduate of this MA programme you will have the opportunity to enhance your future employment opportunities by engaging closely with the Centre’s external partners in the Liverpool and Merseyside region through collaborative research, student placements and internships.

The programme aims at offering a flexible and responsive curriculum, which integrates teaching and research and is dedicated to developing confident, well-rounded, and intellectually open students. Its core modules ensure students’ digital fluency, and its outward-facing and international scope develops confident global citizens and future research leaders.

About the Centre for Health, Medical and Environmental Humanities?

The Health, Cultures and Societies MA is a cross-disciplinary master’s that is supported by cross-faculty research and teaching at the University of Liverpool. The master’s benefits from the research and teaching of several subject areas, including: Archaeology, English, Classics, Geography, Law, Medicine, Psychology, Public Health and Sociology. The Health, Cultures and Societies MA is the master’s programme counterpart to the interdisciplinary research and activity of the University of Liverpool’s Centre for Health, Medical and Environmental Humanities. Spanning three faculties, the Centre for Health, Medical and Environmental Humanities supports researchers working at the intersections of the natural and social sciences, arts and humanities. It fosters opportunities for inter- and transdisciplinary work, while promoting disciplinary contributions.
