Summary
The programme reflects the breadth of contemporary international law, addressing issues as diverse as world trade disputes, United Nations peacekeeping, international human rights litigation, state responsibility and criminal trials before international courts.
- If you want to increase your horizons to an international platform and look beyond domestic legal orders, this LLM is ideal for you.
- You will be taught by a team that truly understands international issues, with staff drawn from all over the world.
- We offer excellent facilities including our dedicated School of Law library; our main University library also contains our extensive collection of legal materials and official publications and is a European Documentation Centre.
- Guest speaker presentations and other extra-curricular events round off the academic programme, and allow you to engage with current debates.
You are required to take at least five courses from the following list (plus one other) and to submit a dissertation as falling within the area. For this programme you must complete the core course, Foundations of International Law. Courses are delivered through a blend of lectures and seminar style teaching.

The LLM in International Law offers a wealth of courses that will equip you with the necessary knowledge to develop a successful career in this field.
Most of our courses include perspectives on professional practice and some also include experiential learning activities, such as simulations of proceedings before international courts and tribunals. These activities are designed to consolidate your understanding of key theoretical concepts by putting them into practice in real-world contexts, and to give you practical experience with documents, drafting skills and analytical frameworks used in professional environment.
Extra-curricular activities
In addition to these curricular activities, students in the International Law LLM also have the opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities that are designed to hone their professional skills:
- Professional Skills Programme (PSP) tailored to LLM students in order to facilitate the improvement of their professional skills.
- Graduate Skills Programme (GSP) offered by the College of Social Sciences to support students in their ability to communicate their professional skills. As developed, for example, in the PSP, to employers.
- Participation in various international law moot court competitions such as the Philip C Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition which help students develop transferrable practical advocacy skills.
- Field trips to places such as The Hague and Geneva to visit the seats of different international institutions to gain first-hand insight into their operation.
Career talks
The Research Group on International Law, Conflict and Security, in collaboration with the Glasgow Centre for International Law and Security runs the ‘International Law as a Profession’ series of career talks with external speakers that aims to give students interested in international law the opportunity to explore different career options in this field. The series invites international lawyers from a variety of backgrounds and specialisms to share their experiences and offer advice, and aims, as a result, to give students the information they need to make important decisions about the next steps in their own careers.
International lawyers and academic researchers working in this field also attend the various research events organised by the research group throughout the year. Together, this gives students in the International Law LLM the opportunity to hear first-hand what it takes to develop a successful professional career in this field.
External collaborations
Students will also have the opportunity to gain valuable professional experience by working with some of our external collaborators.
For example, students can work on their LLM dissertations in collaboration with external organisations such international public authorities and non-governmental organisations. These collaborative dissertation projects will give students the opportunity to develop their research skills in a practical context and to work alongside professionals in the field of international law.
Moreover, students in the International Law LLM will be eligible to apply to several of our unique internship opportunities with organisations in the UK and abroad.
