Research students in the School of Education at UEA are drawn from many different countries and cultures, and a wide range of professions and backgrounds, including schools and higher education; educational policy and administration; police, medical and nurse education; music and the visual arts; community and pastoral education; and international development.

Research degrees involve a programme of independent research under the supervision of academic staff, resulting in a thesis and viva voce examination.

Research in the School is broad in scope and outstanding in quality. We have extensive links with overseas agencies and organisations, and strong working relationships with practitioners, educators and policymakers in all sectors of the education system and other professional fields.

Research is organised around a number of research groups, each undertaking work of national and international significance. Each group comprises faculty, research associates, academic visitors, and research students, providing a vibrant and dynamic research culture.

There is strong cross group collaborative activity between the groups as well as close collaborations with colleagues in other disciplines and professions. Research groups and their expertise include:

– Research in mathematics education – Adult literacy and international development – Higher education and society – Critical cultural studies in education – Sport, health and education research
