The course incorporates 4 distinct options, each of which focuses on a broad period and/or geographical area from which students choose the 1 which corresponds to their dissertation topic. Overall, the programme enriches the understanding of the medieval period, but at the same time it serves two important purposes: It is a degree within itself, in which students are able to learn Latin and palaeography from scratch, learn or improve their skills in modern languages, be introduced to other relevant ancillary disciplines, such as codicology and diplomatic, and become acquainted with scholarly practice through a series of classes; secondly, it provides invaluable preparation for the PhD.

Applicants should have a 1st Class degree or a High Upper 2nd Class degree from a UK university with a minimum average in the final year of 67 per cent; or the equivalent from a university outside the UK. Candidates will normally be expected to have taken a substantial number of history courses at university level and to have a sound background in the period covered by the course. IELTS score of 7.5.
