Summary
Epidemiology is the study of the distribution and determinants of health-related states or events in specified populations, and the application of this study to control and prevent health problems at the population level.
The Master of Philosophy (MPhil) in Epidemiology degree course at Cambridge is a one year full-time Master’s degree. This is a demanding course designed to provide students with the necessary knowledge and skills to be able to critique, design and conduct human population based research, including observational studies and randomised controlled trials. Students will gain an advanced knowledge and understanding of epidemiological principles and procedures, and their application to health, including advanced training in biostatistics and statistical analysis of epidemiological data, critical appraisal and study design.
At the end of the course, students should expect to have gained the knowledge and skills to:
Critically appraise and evaluate the design, analysis and interpretation of epidemiological studies
Describe and discuss the role and contribution of epidemiology to health
Select, devise and develop appropriate study designs for epidemiological research
Conduct appropriate statistical analyses of epidemiological data.
