PhD supervision is available in Aramaic (including Syriac) studies: Aramaic literature and philology, Targum, Neo-Aramaic dialects; Chinese studies: Classical and Modern Chinese language, Chinese literature, philosophy, history, economic history, art and archaeology, linguistics; Hebrew studies: biblical, post-biblical, Medieval and Modern Hebrew literature and philology, Northwest Semitic epigraphy and Ugaritic; Indian studies: Sanskrit, Pali, Prakrit, and Hindi literature and philology, Indian art, archaeology, religion and history; Middle Eastern and Islamic studies: Arabic and Persian classical, modern and colloquial language, Middle Eastern literature, social and political history; Japanese studies: classical and modern Japanese language, Japanese literature, religion and thought, cultural history, classical and modern history, modern Japanese society and politics.
Limited Faculty Trust Funds are available to provide scholarships for students studying Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies and Sanskrit.

A high 2.1 UK Honours degree or overseas equivalent and a Master's degree in the language they wish to study, 65 percent or above overall for applicants applying in the UK or overseas equivalent; where English is not 1st language, one of the following will be needed: IELTS score 7.5 overall band score and at least 7.0 in each element; or TOEFL score 620 in conjunction with 5.0 in test of written english; iBT TOEFL score of at least 110 overall with at least 25 in each element or a Cambridge certificate of proficiency grade A or B are required.
