Explore environmental change and the diverse responses needed to foster behaviours, practices and policies which promote sustainability.
In this interdisciplinary pathway, you will investigate sustainability topics using insights and perspectives from multiple disciplines, with a primary focus on social sciences (e.g., psychology, policy studies, political science, development studies, education, economics, social geography, sociology).
This programme is only available through the Southwest Doctoral Training Partnership. Applications open from October each year and close around January. More information is available to Study as a South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP) student at Bath
You may start this programme at any time. Most students start in September.

**Research content**
Sustainability topics can be wide-ranging, with the content of your research determined with your PhD supervisory team. However, in line with the goals of this PhD programme, your thesis will have a primarily social science focus.
While you will have a lead (primary) supervisor, you should also have at least one additional supervisor working in a different discipline to help you develop your interdisciplinary insights.

Entry requirements | - A good first degree in a social science subject, or Underlying these conditions is a belief that students must bring a minimum combination of theoretical knowledge and practical experience to the programme. Marginal cases are often dealt with at interview, and it is not uncommon for relatively inexperienced students to be asked to defer entry. English Language requirements - IELTS: 7.0 overall with no less than 6.5 in all components You will need to get your English language qualification within 24 months prior to starting your course. If you need to improve your English language skills before starting your studies, you may be able to take a pre-sessional course to reach the required level. |

Masters in Research (MRes)
Summary
**Build your research skills and apply them to important topics in climate change, sustainability and society. You’ll enhance your ability analyse complex data.**
During this course, you’ll explore and critically analyse theories, methodologies and paradigms of research that are relevant to some of society’s most pressing concerns – including climate change and sustainability.
With a focus on quantitative and qualitative research methods and approaches, you’ll gain the essential skills needed to progress your studies or become a professional researcher.
Upon completion of this course, you will be able to demonstrate:
- a critical understanding of research-based sustainability literature across a range of disciplines
- comprehension of the relationships between theory and practice in the field of sustainability, individual and corporate responsibility
- thorough and in-depth understanding of key debates relating to environmental challenges, and the resilience and adaptability of political and economic systems
- detailed and comprehensive understanding of current issues across disciplines within the theme of sustainability
You’ll enhance your understanding of the techniques used in the analysis of large-scale data and how to effectively present key insights and findings.
This course is designed to provide high-quality training to potential doctoral students, as well as essential research skills that are desirable in a number of private and public sector roles. It is delivered through the University of Bath alongside our partner institutions:

**South West Doctoral Training Partnership**
This MRes is recognised by the Economic & Social Research Council (ESRC), specifically, as part of the larger South West Doctoral Training Partnership (SWDTP). It can be taken as a course in its own right, or if you hold an SWDTP studentship you can take the 1+3 (MRes + PhD) pathway.
If you wish to be considered for a 1+3 SWDTP studentship, then you must apply for your preferred PhD route and not the stand-alone MRes. You should follow our how to apply guidelines.
For those holding a 1+3 SWDTP studentship, progression from the MRes to the MPhil or PhD stage is dependent on an acceptable level of achievement.
