MA
Summary
Our MA Fine Art courses welcome creators from all spheres. Whether you’re an artist, designer, illustrator, architect, theorist or graduate from the broader humanities, you’ll explore your artistic practice, question what it means to be a contemporary artist, and develop your critical skills.
Whether you choose to study at UCA Canterbury or UCA Farnham, our skilled lecturers and sessional staff (who are also professional artists, filmmakers, curators and theorists) will challenge the way you think about the world and support you in your personal areas of exploration and research.
On both courses, you’ll learn through seminars, tutorials, guest lectures, workshops, study visits and critiques, with access to a broad range of specialist workshops where you can work with different mediums, supported by expert technical staff.
Both courses enable you to critically evaluate your own work and the work of others, and support you in developing your visual and conceptual thinking as you work on a personal research project.
Our Masters course in Fine Art at Farnham has strong London links – you’ll have the opportunity to exhibit and test your work in live contexts through exhibitions in the city, or by presenting your ideas at conferences. Covering all areas of artistic practice, the course has a particular strength in sculptural and expanded drawing, and invites students to think about how their ideas might be spatially realised in innovative, ambitious ways.
Students on our Canterbury-based MA have similar opportunities to exhibit work and test ideas through partnerships with regional arts organisations including Turner Contemporary, Whitstable Biennale, Strange Cargo and the Folkestone Triennial. One of the oldest and most highly respected MA courses in the university, this course invites students to explore their ideas through a range of media.

Master of Arts (with Honours) - MA (Hons)
Summary
OCA MA Fine Art programme is a two-year part-time course, beginning January 2021.
Through online delivery the course is accessible to anyone who, because of work, caring or family commitments, would not otherwise be able to consider studying at higher degree level.
The MA Fine Art programme offers students the opportunity to work in a medium of their choice; past students have worked in a wide range of media, including painting, sculpture, writing, printmaking, installation, performance, curation, time-based work and digital art. The emphasis of the programme is on studio practice, with theory, context and professional practice integrated throughout.
As you progress through the course you will be able to share experiences and learning through group and individual work. The curriculum builds from a more structured programme towards autonomous study, with an emphasis on enquiry, critical reflection and exploration.
Through varied teaching approaches, such as lectures, seminars, tutorials and critiques as well as one-to-one tutorial support, you’ll benefit from the expertise of core course tutors. These professionals have an outstanding range of expertise and are practicing artists in the field in addition to be experienced educators.
Progression routes are individual as well as collective, and you will be supported to develop your increasingly sophisticated practice towards public presentation of your work and effective and appropriate communication of your ideas. Whatever your aspiration, whether it is increasing the range and impact of your networks nationally and internationally, moving on to further related study, or work in the arts, you will benefit from this course. Our MA Fine Art introduces professional practice in your chosen discipline and offers support of your aspirations.
