Admission to this course is at graduate level, and applicants will hold a good Honours degree (minimum 2.1) from a recognized university. The course is designed for students from a wide range of backgrounds. The course has 2 different strands for students with no prior knowledge of Mandarin and students with intermediate or advanced Mandarin. For students with no prior knowledge of Mandarin, proven language learning ability will be useful, although not necessarily in an Asian language.
Core modules: Chinese language and writing system; modern Chinese history; Mandarin 1; contemporary Chinese society and politics; Mandarin 2; China in comparative perspective. Electives: governance and politics of the People’s Republic of China; business and economy of contemporary China; religion and thought; Chinese diaspora and language in a global context; Mandarin 3; Mandarin 4.
