Wrexham Glyndŵr University launches initiatives to help students with funding crisis
To help students keep their finances on track, Wrexham Glyndŵr University has launched a range of initiatives to help them out.
These include:
- The ‘Help Yourshelf’ campaign by Wrexham Glyndŵr Students’ Union (WGSU) – this has given out more than 1,200 food and personal hygiene items since its launch in October 2022. Its stocked with non-perishable food items, toiletries, sanitary products and stationery given to students in need.
- Well-Fed scheme – this partnership between Flintshire County Council, ClwydAlyn Housing and Can Cook has been set up to provide everyone with access to fresh, good quality ingredients, regardless of their income and to give them the confidence to cook good food. WGSU will be working with them to ensure students and staff have access to their services. The cost of the meals will be subsidised, making a meal for one just £2, or a meal in a slow cooker bag that serves four people just £4.
- Clothing Exchange – WGSU and Preworn joined forces to host their first Clothing Exchange during Green Week 2023, to support students with the cost of living and to promote sustainable living. As well as exchanging clothing, to further assist students, Preworn offered a 10% discount on their website to all WGSU students who signed up for their mailing list. Any remaining clothing after the exchange period was donated to The British Heart Foundation.
The driving force behind Help Yourshelf and Student Voice Co-ordinator for WGSU, Katie Taffinder, explains, “The rising cost of living is having a really detrimental impact on a lot of people – and we are well aware that there are a number of students who are feeling anxious about their own personal circumstances.” She continues, “We set up ‘Help Yourshelf’ in order to hopefully take the load off a little – and provide some peace of mind to anyone that is having a challenging time financially. Since we set up, we have given out more than 1,200 items.”
Vice-Chancellor of Wrexham Glyndŵr University, Professor Maria Hinfelaar, adds, “The Wrexham Glyndŵr Students’ Union team have done our university community proud by setting up the ‘Help Yourshelf’ initiative. Speaking on behalf of all at WGU, we have been overwhelmed by their generosity and community-centred approach, particularly at a time of challenge for many. We’d also like to thank the various organisations that are lending their support to this scheme. I know that this initiative is offering reassurance to those who need it.”
