University of East LondonThe University of East London has come second in a prestigious awards ceremony recognising its student careers’ policy.

This is the second time that UEL has been nominated for the Target Jobs National Graduate Recruitment Awards 2023

UEL was nominated in the Best University Employability Strategy Award category. The submission outlined its holistic approach to its Careers First mission, which promotes every student’s ability to undertake meaningful progress to a rewarding and satisfying career after graduation.

It stated, “Our 10-year Vision 2028 strategy places careers at the centre of everything we do. This is driven from the top down and the bottom up, enabling our Graduate Employability Action Plan to be created and delivered as an institution wide initiative."

At the heart of UEL’s careers’ initiative is the Mental Wealth program, which is supported by:

  • Diversity of Thought – an employer partnership program supporting social mobility and levelling up.
  • Funded Internship Scheme – providing flexible paid internships within UEL and externally.

  • East London Talent – a freelance marketplace platform and online retail store supporting students selling their skills and products.
  • Career Zone – a one-stop portal for students to access support, monitor progress, find job opportunities and engage with employers.
  • Talent Hack – recruitment events showcasing students to future employers.

This second nomination reflects our commitment to the Careers First agenda.”

This includes support for freelancing and portfolio careers or help with launching a successful start-up. The impact of our 'Enterprise For All' strategy is demonstrated by a 515% increase in graduate start-ups between 2018/19 and 2021/22."

In 2022, UEL’s Mental Wealth & Professional Fitness program achieved the Pearson HE Innovate Award for its “most innovate approach to developing employability skills”.
