University of Aberdeen launches MSc in Sustainable Energy Geoscience
The University of Aberdeen has announced the launch of a new masters in Sustainable Energy Geoscience.
This new MSc program applies earth science expertise to aspects of energy transition, drawing on Aberdeen’s School of Geoscience’s world-leading expertise in subsurface earth science.
The MSc in Sustainable Energy Geoscience is a 12-month masters designed to equip graduates with the necessary skills to deliver on global net zero ambitions, and has a focus on energy extraction and storage scenarios. Students will also examine the societal implications of the energy transition, including social justice, global dynamics and sustainability goals.
Researcher and Champion for Carbon Capture and Storage at the University of Aberdeen, Dr Clare Bond, explains, “Sustainable energy is a rapidly developing area for research and innovation in the UK, with geothermal energy and carbon capture and storage (CCS) central components of the UK Government’s strategy for reducing greenhouse emissions and reaching net-zero by 2050.” She continues, “This new MSc draws on the ground-breaking research being conducted at the University in areas such as geothermal energy, CCS, nuclear waste storage and critical materials for the energy transition – as well as our doctoral training programmes and industry partnerships.”
Head of the School of Geosciences, Dr Dave Muirhead, adds, “The launch of the University’s Centre for Energy Transition underlines our commitment to working alongside the energy industry to meet net zero ambitions, reflecting Aberdeen’s status as a city at the forefront of energy research and development. It is an exciting time to study earth science at Aberdeen, and our long-standing industrial and academic partnerships will ensure that our graduates are equipped with the skills that will play a key role in the energy transition.”
