Summary

Why choose Mental Health Nursing MSc (with NMC Registration) at Middlesex?

This course is designed for students who already hold an undergraduate degree and want to gain an NMC-registered qualification in Mental Health Nursing. Developed in partnership with our NHS trust partners, the programme equips you with the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to provide compassionate and effective care for people experiencing mental health difficulties.

You will study at our highly regarded facilities at the West Stand of the StoneX Stadium in Barnet, recently redeveloped as part of a £23 million project. With placements at leading London NHS hospitals, including North London NHS Foundation Trust, you will gain real-world experience in some of the capital’s most innovative healthcare settings.

  • Practice-based learning: Develop your nursing skills through placements with our NHS partners across north London, applying your learning in real clinical environments

  • Expert teaching and support: Learn from experienced tutors who are active in their fields and who will support your academic development and career progression from day one

  • Clinical simulation training: Build confidence through high-fidelity simulations covering areas such as resuscitation and caring for critically ill patients

  • Holistic mental health care: Learn how to assess, treat, plan care and support individuals in their recovery, working collaboratively with service users, families and carers

  • Professional and leadership skills: Develop communication, critical thinking and problem-solving skills while gaining experience of leadership, teamwork and decision-making in healthcare settings

  • Digital and professional competence: Build confidence using information technology in both academic and clinical practice environments.

  • During the course you will study topics including therapeutic communication to support recovery, anatomy and physiology, pathophysiology, medicine management and drug calculations, and the fundamentals of mental health nursing care and research.

You will develop the skills needed to become a reflective and evidence-based practitioner who can contribute to service improvement. By graduation, you will be prepared to work autonomously and collaboratively in health and social care teams.

With 145 years of experience delivering professional education, Middlesex University prepares students for meaningful careers. On successful completion of the course, you will be eligible to register as a Mental Health Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) and begin your career supporting people to live healthier lives.

Placements We maintain strong partnership relationships with NHS and independent health and social care organisations so that you’ll have access to excellent placement opportunities as a nursing or midwifery student.

We have approximately 500 pre-registration students out on placement at any one time, with over 400 placements being utilised.

You must satisfy the National and Midwifery Council (NMC) requirements to achieve a minimum of 2300 hours in practice during the whole of their programme, to gain professional registration with the NMC. Up to 450 hrs of the 2300 will be met through Simulated Practice Learning. Practice experiences can take place in an approved learning environment across NHS Trusts that are part of NHS London and in the independent and private sector.

Duration of a placement is 25 weeks per year.
