Summary

The Master of Arts in Theological Studies is a unique MA programme that aims to foster a holistic approach to doing theology which rejuvenates the study and practice of Christian theology for Church and World.

The Master of Arts in Theological Studies is a unique MA programme that aims to foster a holistic approach to doing theology which rejuvenates the study and practice of Christian theology for Church and World.

We accomplish this aim by means of the integration of the commonly recognised sources of theological knowledge: the Bible (Scripture), the historical construction of Christian belief (Tradition), considered, critical thought (Reason), the role of experience (Experience) and the witness of the living community of faith (the Church) as it proclaims the Gospel and makes disciples. In addition, this core concept of doing theology is brought, in various ways, into the theological sub-disciplines (Biblical studies, Systematic Theology, Theological Ethics, and Theology of Worship) represented by the optional modules. We view these sub-disciplines as areas or emphases of theology that are mutually interpretive.

This programme is for you if: - You are a theology or religious studies graduate seeking an innovated and flexible Masters-level qualification in theology;

  • You are contemplating PhD level work in theological studies or a related discipline and you are seeking a foundation for doctoral research;

  • You are involved in ministry and are looking for a path of lifelong learning that will enhance your service;

  • You have never formally studied theology but wish to integrate your professional and personal interests with theological understanding.

Degree Structure: The MA Theological Studies (180 credits) consists of three core modules (one 40 credit module, one 20 credit module and the 60 credit dissertation) and three optional modules (20 credits each). The Post-Graduate Certificate in Theological Studies (60 credits) consists of one 40 credit Core module and one 20 credit optional module

Modules of Study and Time Commitment: Students study either in blended mode or online mode. ‘Blended mode’ means that students will study up to 60 credits onsite at LST with their other credits studied via LST’s Virtual Learning Environment. ‘Online mode’ means that students will study entirely through LST’s Virtual Learning Environment. Full-time (12 months) students are expected to commit around 40 hours per week to their studies. Part-time students (24 or 36 months) are expected to commit from 14-20 hours per week to their studies. *For Full-Time (12 months) study, we strongly recommend that you have a theology or religious studies (or closely related field) degree.
