Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine
Unique Position in Global Health
For more than a century, Liverpool School of Tropical Medicine (LSTM) has been at the forefront of global health innovation.
Founded on the 12th November 1898 by Sir Alfred Lewis Jones, an influential shipping magnate, LSTM began due to extensive trade with overseas regions from the prominent port city of Liverpool with areas such as West and Southern Africa. Many travellers returned from overseas to be hospitalised with ‘tropical’ diseases they brought back from their travels. The School was set up to investigate these outbreaks and became the first institution in the world dedicated to research and teaching in tropical medicine.
Now amongst the world’s elite institutions, in the top 5.3% of universities worldwide (CWUR, 2024), we are recognised globally for our impact on health and education and ranked 2nd in the UK for our overall research impact (REF, 2021).
Outstanding Student Experience
From your very first day, to graduation, and beyond, you will experience the difference our top-ranked teaching support systems and community make. We are proud to be ranked 1st for overall student satisfaction in the UK, (PTES, 2025).
