University of Liverpool: School of English

University of Liverpool
Department of English

About us
The Department of English at the University of Liverpool has an internationally renowned academic team and a strong research ethos. We focus on the development of English literature and the functioning of written and spoken English through time and around the world.

We have a reputation for radical thinking, as exemplified by our success rate in the BBC and Arts and Humanities Research Council’s ‘New Generation Thinkers’ scheme. In total, five members of our academic staff have been selected since the scheme was established in 2010, three of whom are still with the Department today.

The University of Liverpool is host to Europe’s largest collection of science fiction materials, which includes the John Wyndham Archive; and is the home of the annual Liverpool Literary Festival.

We are pleased to announce the introduction of three NEW programmes for September 2022:

Research programmes
English at Liverpool provides an inspiring setting in which to pursue postgraduate research. We offer opportunities to study creative writing and literature from a wide variety of periods and genres, and a range of approaches to understanding the way in which the English language works. You will be supervised by leading experts who draw on cutting-edge research to inform their academic practice. Study PhD, MPhil or MRes.

Research expertise
Ranked top 10 in the UK for ‘world-leading’ and ‘internationally excellent’ research (REF 2014), the Department of English conducts research in three main areas: literature, language and creative writing. Our work fosters interdisciplinarity and aims to develop strategic partnerships, particularly with local and national cultural organisations to reach those who can benefit from our research.
