The Department of English at the University of Liverpool has an internationally renowned academic team and a strong research ethos. We offer opportunities to study creative writing and literature from a wide variety of periods and genres, and a range of approaches to understanding the way in which the English language works.
We have a reputation for radical thinking, as exemplified by our success rate in the BBC and Arts and Humanities Research Council’s ‘New Generation Thinkers’ scheme. In total, five members of our academic staff have been selected since the scheme was established in 2010, three of whom are still with the Department today.
Why Liverpool?
We offer an inspiring setting in which to pursue postgraduate studies. We are host to Europe’s largest collection of science fiction materials, which includes the John Wyndham Archive; and home to the annual Liverpool Literary Festival. The department is situated in the historic, Georgian townhouses opposite the idyllic Abercromby Square, in the heart of a vibrant city-based campus where students can immerse themselves in a place of historic significance.
English graduates from the University of Liverpool are highly skilled, imaginative, and knowledgeable. They are equipped, as employees and as citizens, to influence thinking around them and to engage in debate about the future. These are qualities they develop through rigorous academic training and effective and targeted work experience gained with our numerous partners in Liverpool's dynamic arts and culture scene.
