University of Liverpool: Philosophy
http://www.liverpool.ac.uk/philosophy/
The Department of Philosophy is an inspiring community of students and staff who are addressing an unparalleled range of topics, from logic to literature, science to spirituality, ethics to existentialism.
As you would expect from a Russell Group institution, we have a long history of combining research excellence in core areas of philosophy with innovative work at the frontiers of the discipline: from literature to spirituality, Chinese philosophy to animal ethics, neo-Platonism to feminism. For us, philosophy is a set of approaches and methods that can help us to make sense of whatever is puzzling, perplexing, or interesting in the world around us.
Why Liverpool?
Liverpool is a city with a stellar reputation for philosophical thought. It also has a strong cultural tradition and boasts the most museums and galleries outside of London – most of which are free. We do not conduct our work in a vacuum but as part of this amazing city with its rich history of commerce, culture, protest, industry, and migration. We work with partners in the Bluecoat Gallery, Tate Liverpool, National Museums Liverpool, NHS North-West and more to find applications for our work and to inspire our thinking and the practices of our communities.
Master’s Degrees
Our MA Philosophy gives students access to the very wide range of philosophical topics and expertise available in the Department. Available on both a full- and part-time basis, it provides excellent preparation for research in Philosophy, as well as being an attractive postgraduate course in itself.
Our recently launched MA Philosophy (Public Policy) is a new and exciting specialist pathway which enables our students to study how philosophical theory and analysis can be used to understand and shape public policy and scientific practice, and can act as a force for social and political change.
The MA Art, Philosophy and Cultural Institutions is an exciting interdisciplinary programme which combines philosophical aesthetics, art theory and hands-on experience in galleries and museums, thereby bringing together both theoretical and practical interests.
Our MRes programme allows students to undertake a one year full-time or two year part-time research project. Training in research skills is provided, as well as supervision from one or more academic specialists.
Research Degrees
As a small department, we combine a friendly, supportive learning environment with exceptional research diversity, making Liverpool an ideal place to study towards a research degree. Students can pursue an MPhil or PhD degree on a full- or part-time basis, with supervision available in several areas.
Research Excellence
We seek to maintain the highest standard in research excellence while pursuing fruitful civic engagements, collaborative relationships and opportunities for knowledge exchange and research impact. Our work encompasses a wide range of topics, traditions and projects, including our pioneering Philosophy and the Future research theme, which focuses on the ethical, political, social, metaphysical and spiritual implications of climate change, technological and scientific developments, and emerging forms of social and political interaction. This broad theme brings us together to contemplate the challenges that our students and their descendants will face in the twenty-first century and beyond. Existing work in the department includes the implications of big data for medical practice; the future of the concept of the human; the function of myth in constructing future narratives; the role of the philosopher in a changing society and the philosophy of games and gaming.
Events
We run two high-profile lecture/seminar series:
- The Stapledon Colloquium, a free seminar series which features external and internal speakers presenting current philosophical research; and
- The Work in Progress Meetings, where the Department meets throughout teaching weeks to share work in progress. This might include papers and chapters in preparation, book proposals, funding applications or ideas for new research projects and collaborations.
